The river ends its journey by flowing into the North Taranaki Bight. This is a large bay on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The river's mouth is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of a town called Mokau.

The name "Waikawau" comes from the Māori language. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage explains its meaning. "Waikawau" translates to "water of the shag". A shag is a type of bird that dives for fish.
