Waimea Bay is a famous bay found in Haleiwa on the North Shore of O'ahu, one of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. It's located where the Waimea River meets the ocean. The area next to it is called Waimea Valley. The name Waimea means "reddish water" in the Hawaiian language. This bay is well-known for its huge waves in winter and calm waters in summer.

History of Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay has an interesting history. On February 28, 1779, Captain Charles Clerke visited the bay. He was in command of the ship HMS Resolution. This happened shortly after Captain James Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay. Waimea Bay was the only place on O'ahu that this expedition visited.

At that time, Waimea Valley was home to many people. You can still see the remains of Pu'u o Mahuka, an important ancient Hawaiian temple called a heiau, located above the bay.

Exploring Waimea Bay's Geography

Waimea Bay is a beautiful spot along Kamehameha Highway. The bay is on the northwest side of the highway as you enter the area.

Just above the bay, you'll find the Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Monument. This is a very important historical site for Native Hawaiians. From here, you can get amazing views of Waimea Bay and the Waianae Mountain range.

Over time, the shoreline of Waimea Bay has been changing. This is due to both natural forces and things people have done.

Surfing at Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay is famous for its incredible surfing, especially in winter. During these months, big storms in the North Pacific create huge waves. These waves travel to O'ahu's North Shore, making places like Waimea, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach perfect for surfing contests. Surfers usually know days in advance when these big waves are coming.

In contrast, during the summer, Waimea Bay's water is usually clear and calm. This makes it a great spot for swimming and enjoying the beach.

The Birth of Big Wave Surfing

The surf break at Waimea Bay played a huge role in the history of Big wave surfing. For many years, the giant waves at the bay were considered too dangerous to ride. But on November 7, 1957, a few brave surfers finally paddled out and rode these massive waves. This was a groundbreaking moment for surfing.

For decades, Waimea Bay was known as the most important big wave surf spot in the world. Even though new ways of surfing, like tow-in surfing, have led to the discovery of other amazing big wave spots, Waimea Bay still holds a special place in surfing history.

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Contest

One of the most famous surfing events, the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau, takes place at Waimea Bay. This contest honors Eddie Aikau, a legendary surfer and the first lifeguard on the North Shore of O'ahu.

The "Eddie" is very special because it only happens when the ocean swells reach a minimum height of 20 feet (6.1 m). This means the waves in the bay will be about 30 feet (9.1 m) to 40 feet (12 m) tall! Since it started in 1984, the contest has only been held ten times because these conditions are so rare. The most recent contest was in January 2023.

On January 28, 1998, Hawaii even issued its first "condition black." This meant all North Shore beaches, including Waimea Bay, were legally closed due to extremely large waves. The Eddie contest that year had to be canceled.

Waimea Bay in Popular Culture

Waimea Bay has appeared in many movies, songs, and TV shows:

  • The 1964 film Ride the Wild Surf and the Jan and Dean song "Ride the Wild Surf" helped make Waimea Bay famous. The song even became a Top 20 National hit.
  • While the TV series Lost didn't film most of its scenes at Waimea Bay, some parts might have been shot in the nearby valley park.
  • The 1963 Beach Boys' song Surfin' U.S.A. mentions Waimea Bay.
  • Jimmy Buffett's song "Beautiful Swimmers" also mentions Waimea Bay.
  • In the 1987 film Surf Nazis Must Die, Waimea Bay is mentioned when a character asks about the best surfing beaches.
  • Many other Hollywood movies, like "Big Wednesday," and surf documentaries have featured Waimea Bay's famous waves.
