A Look Back at Wainui's History
Early Settlers and Land Use
People started settling in Wainui soon after 1841. This was when the New Zealand government bought the land. In the mid-1800s, people who dug for kauri gum often visited the area. Around 1850, families from England, Scotland, and Ireland settled here. These included the Hutson, Thick, King, Lloyd, and Jacobs families.
When early settlers arrived, they found lots of mānuka and fern plants. There were also large kauri forests. People made a living by cutting timber and digging for kauri gum. Around 1860, families began clearing land for farming. A famous New Zealand explorer, Charles Heaphy, owned much of the land. In 1862, he sold 104 acres to William Lamont, who made bricks.
Community Buildings and Growth
In 1867, the Wainui Presbyterian Church was built. It was the first public building in Wainui. The church quickly became a central meeting place. School lessons first started in homes around 1860. The official Wainui School was built in 1879. In 1894, a famous cartoonist named Trevor Lloyd married Emily Lamont at the church. She was William Lamont's daughter.
Wainui was mostly a farming area for a long time. In the 1960s, the local council allowed land to be divided. This created smaller plots for people to live on, known as lifestyle blocks.
