Wainui Beach is a small, sunny place on the coast of New Zealand's North Island. It's located just north of Tuaheni Point, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of Gisborne. You can easily reach it by driving on State Highway 35.

This beautiful beach is famous for its amazing surf waves. In fact, the NZ Automobile Association even named it one of the 101 Must-do places for Kiwis! Wainui Beach is also home to the Quinn family, who are well-known surfers. Brothers Maz and Jay, along with their sister Holly, have all become national surfing champions.

People and Population

Wainui Beach is a small community. In 2018, about 819 people lived there. This number has been growing steadily over the years. For example, in 2006, there were 672 people, and by 2013, it had grown to 720.

Who Lives in Wainui Beach?

The people living in Wainui Beach come from different backgrounds. Most residents are of European or Pākehā heritage. About one-fifth of the population identifies as Māori. There are also smaller groups of Pacific peoples, Asian, and other ethnicities.

When it comes to beliefs, many people in Wainui Beach say they have no religion. However, a good number of residents are Christian. Some also follow Māori religious beliefs, Hindu, Buddhist, or other faiths.

There are two main park areas in Wainui Beach:

  • Wainui Reserve: This is a sports ground where you can play games and enjoy outdoor activities.
  • Wainui Beach and Lysnar Reserve: This area includes the main beach itself. It's a fantastic place for swimming and surfing. You'll also find a boat ramp here, perfect for launching boats for boat fishing. If you have a dog, there's a special dog walking area. Plus, it's a popular spot for horse riding and kite surfing.
