The Wairaurahiri River is a special river located in the southern part of Fiordland, New Zealand. It acts like a natural drain, carrying water from Lake Hauroko all the way to the sea. This river is known for its fast-moving water and exciting rapids.

About the Wairaurahiri River

The Wairaurahiri River is about 27 km (17 mi) long. It starts at Lake Hauroko, which is the deepest lake in New Zealand. From there, the river flows southwards until it reaches Foveaux Strait. This strait is a body of water that separates New Zealand's South Island from Stewart Island.

A Big Drop

The river has a significant drop in height from its start to its end. It falls about 157 m (515 ft) from Lake Hauroko down to the sea. This big drop makes the water flow very quickly, creating many exciting sections along its path.

River Adventures

Because the Wairaurahiri River flows so fast, it has what are called 'grade-3 rapids'. This means the water is quite rough, with waves and obstacles that can make boating tricky. Many regular boats have found it hard to travel safely on this river.

Jetboats on the River

Due to the challenging conditions, the main type of boat you'll see on the Wairaurahiri River are powerful jetboats. These special boats are designed to handle fast-moving water and shallow areas. Commercial jetboat tours often use the river, offering thrilling rides for visitors. These boats are operated by experienced drivers who know the river well.

Protecting Nature

The area around the Wairaurahiri River is home to many native animals. However, some introduced animals, like stoats and rats, can harm the local wildlife.

Trapping Programs

To help protect the native birds and other creatures, local people have set up a special program. They place traps along the river to catch stoats and rats. This helps to keep the number of these pests down and allows native species to thrive.

Possums in the Area

Another animal that has been in the area for a long time is the brushtail possum. These animals were quite common in the Wairaurahiri River region as far back as the early 1900s.
