Where is the Waitahanui River?

The Waitahanui River is one of the three main rivers that flow into Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo is a very large and famous lake in New Zealand. The other two main rivers that feed into it are the Tongariro River and the Tauranga Taupo River.

This river starts its journey in the foothills of the Kaimanawa Ranges. It then flows through the small town of Waitahanui. You can even see the river as you drive across State Highway 1! After passing through the town, the Waitahanui River finally empties into Lake Taupo.

Fishing in the Waitahanui River

The Waitahanui River is a very popular spot for fishing, especially for catching trout. Many people come here to try and catch these amazing fish.

Trout in the River

During the colder winter months, two types of trout, Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout, swim up the river from Lake Taupo. They do this to lay their eggs, which is called spawning. It's a very important part of their life cycle.

The 'Picket Fence' Fishing Spot

Near where the Waitahanui River meets Lake Taupo, there's a famous fishing spot called the 'Picket Fence'. It's called this because sometimes so many anglers (people who fish) stand close together across the river mouth, it looks like a fence! They stand in the water, sometimes up to their chests, hoping to catch trout as they move between the lake and the river.
