Wakool is a town in the western Murray region of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Murray River Council area. Wakool is about 791 kilometers (491 miles) southwest of Sydney, the state capital. It is also 336 kilometers (209 miles) northwest of Melbourne. In 2016, about 297 people lived in Wakool.

A Look Back in Time

The Wakool Post Office first opened on January 1, 1870. It closed a few years later in 1874. However, it reopened in 1926. More people started settling in the Wakool area in the 1890s. The town grew up around a railway station. This station was on the train line between Echuca and Balranald. In 1942, farmers in the area began growing rice. Other important industries in Wakool include raising sheep for wool and cattle.

Wakool has a few places that are important for their history. These are called heritage-listed sites. One of these special places is the Murray Downs Homestead on Moulamein Highway.

Sports in Wakool

Wakool used to have an Australian rules football club. This team played in the Golden Rivers Football League. They played from 1958 to 2015, and again in 2017 and 2018. The team was very successful. They won seven championships in total. These wins were in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1989, 1990, 2006, and 2013.
