The Walk of the Amazon Heroes (in Spanish: Paseo de los Héroes Amazónicos) is a special walking path in Iquitos, Loreto, Peru. It's like a long park in the middle of a street called Mariscal Cáceres Avenue. This place is quite new, built around 2009 and opened in early 2010. It is mainly dedicated to brave heroes who protected the people of the Amazon during different battles.
About the Walk of the Amazon Heroes
The Walk of the Amazon Heroes is a unique boulevard. It is about 4 meters wide and runs down the center of Mariscal Cáceres Avenue. It separates the two-lane road, one for traffic going East and one for traffic going West.
This special path is only for people walking. It has a paved path and its sides are decorated with many interesting features.
What You'll See There
Along the walk, you will find 40 busts of heroes. These are sculptures of their heads and shoulders, placed on tall stands called pedestals. There are also 43 lamps that light up the path.
You can enjoy beautiful ornamental flower gardens and find some seats. These seats are covered by small, clear transparent covers, like mini-roofs. At night, each hero's bust gets its own light from a special lamp.
The walk starts near Miguel Grau Avenue. Here, you'll see a statue of a soldier holding the Flag of Peru. This statue rests on a very large pedestal and is known as The Unknown Soldier (El Soldado Desconocido).
To keep people safe and protect the gardens, the edges of the walk have chain fences called balustrades. The roads on either side of the walk are 5 meters wide, which helps traffic move smoothly.
Length of the Walk
Only the first four long blocks of the walk are decorated with the hero busts. This section goes up to Ramón Castilla Street. After this, the path continues without the busts.
However, the rest of the pavement is still well-maintained and decorated. It stretches all the way to Caballero Lastre, a street along Lake Moronocha. This area marks one of the western edges of Iquitos.
