Wallace is a small town in Fountain County, Indiana, United States. It was first called Jacksonville. The town is located in Jackson Township. In 2010, about 105 people lived there.

History

How Wallace Began

Jacksonville was one of the first places settled in Fountain County. John Bowman and his father Henry started the town in the early 1830s. It was built on land north of Mill Creek. The town was named after Andrew Jackson. People often called it "Jackville" for short.

The very first person to live in the area was Richard Williams. He built a cabin there in 1826. This was several years before the town was officially planned. William Guilliams built the first house after Jacksonville was laid out. By the 1880s, the town had about 24 houses.

Early Businesses and People

Many important people worked in early Jacksonville. William Snooks was the first blacksmith in the area. Samuel Glass ran a place where people could stay and relax. Alvah Doke was a shoemaker, and George McCline made cabinets.

Doctors like Dr. Reeves, Dr. A. M. C. Hawes, and Dr. Joseph Roberts helped the sick. There were also many general storekeepers. They sold all sorts of goods to the townspeople.

How Wallace Got Its Name

The town got a post office when David Wallace was the Governor of Indiana. John Bowman and Judge Mitchell C. Black named the post office after Governor Wallace. Later, the entire town took on the name Wallace. John Bowman was the first postmaster, and Judge Black was the first mail carrier.

Wallace in the 1950s

In 1950, Wallace had many local businesses. These included Ira Wilkinson General Store and J. W. Grimes Grocery. The grocery store also held the post office. Ralph Myers sold TVs and appliances. Carl Starnes offered insurance.

There was also Uplinger Cafe and Paul Mitchell Barber Shop. McGinnis Garage fixed cars. Clores Grocery and Lunch, Ellingwood's Lumber Yard, and Alward's Skelgas Service were also open. Dr. H. M. Rusk had his doctor's office there. The town also had a blacksmith shop and a food processing plant.

The Wallace School taught students from first grade through twelfth grade. It served all of Jackson Township. In 1951, eight students graduated from the high school.

Where Wallace Is Located

Wallace is located at 39°59'14" north and 87°8'53" west. A stream called Mill Creek flows from the northeast. It runs along the east and south sides of the town.
