The Wallace Farm (also called Pioneer Farm) is a very old farm located at 27 Wallace Road in Columbia, New Hampshire. This farm started in the late 1700s. What's really cool is that the same family has owned it ever since! The farm covers about 125 acres (which is like 95 football fields). It has a farmhouse built around 1825, a carriage house, and a barn. The Wallace Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 because it's so important.

Exploring Wallace Farm: A Look Back in Time

The Wallace Farm is in northern Columbia, a small town right next to the Connecticut River. The farm land stretches from the river all the way east, crossing United States Route 3. The part of the farm west of the highway has fields for crops, pastures for animals, and some woods. The area east of the highway is mostly forest, including a big "sugar bush" where maple syrup might be made!

The Farmhouse and Its Buildings

The main farm buildings are located near an old part of US 3, between the current road and the river. The farmstead has several buildings connected together. The oldest one is the main house, built around 1825. This house is made of timber and has two and a half stories. It's shaped like an "L" and shows off a style called Greek Revival. The inside of the house was updated a lot in the 1850s or 1860s.

Attached to the main house are three other buildings. There's a carriage house and a horse barn, both built around the same time as the house. There's also a garage that was added in the early 1900s. A separate dairy barn is also part of the farm.

The Wallace Family Story

The Wallace family has owned this farm since the late 1700s. Three Wallace brothers were among the very first people to settle in Columbia. They arrived in 1785. Only William, the youngest brother, stayed to work the land they had cleared. He soon became one of the most successful farmers in the area.

At first, the farm grew many different kinds of crops and raised various animals. But in the late 1800s, the farm started focusing mainly on dairying, which means raising cows for milk. This continued until 1986, when the cows were sold. Today, the Wallace Farm is one of the best examples of a connected 19th-century farmstead in the community. It helps us see what farm life was like long ago!
