Wallins Creek is a small community in Harlan County, Kentucky, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area identified by the government for statistics, but it is not an officially incorporated city or town.
In 2020, about 212 people lived in Wallins Creek. Back in 2010, when it was still considered a city, its population was 156.
History
Wallins Creek started as a coal mining town in 1925. A company called the Wallins Creek Coal Corporation owned the mine. Mining coal was a very important job here for many years.
The Wallins Creek Baptist Church was founded even earlier, in 1855. It began with 30 members. The community is also home to Wallins Elementary School. This school has been open since the 1940s. It has won many awards for its sports teams and academic achievements.
Geography
Wallins Creek is located in the western part of Harlan County. It sits in the valley of the Cumberland River. A main road, U.S. Route 119, goes through the northern part of the community.
This road leads northwest about 8 miles (13 km) to Harlan. Harlan is the main town and county seat for the area. The road also goes southwest about 23 miles (37 km) to Pineville.
In 2010, the total area of Wallins Creek was about 0.56 square miles (1.44 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.07 square kilometers), is water.
