History of Walter's Hot Dogs
Walter's Hot Dog Stand is a family business. It was started in 1919 by Walter Warrington. He began his business in Mamaroneck, New York.
Early Days and First Stand
At first, Walter sold apples and cider. He had bought an orchard to get his apples. His very first stand was on Boston Post Road. It was near a school that is now the Town of Mamaroneck offices.
The Unique Hot Dogs Begin
Later, Walter moved his stand to a new spot on Post Road. This is where he started selling his special hot dogs. These hot dogs are made from a mix of beef, pork, and veal. They are also cooked in a unique way: the wieners are split open and then grilled. Walter also built a machine to make apple cider at this new location.
The Famous Pagoda Building
In 1928, Walter bought the land at 937 Palmer Avenue. He built the stand that you see today. This building has a special pagoda-style roof. A pagoda is a type of tower often found in Asian architecture. Walter's roof is made of copper and has turned a light green color over time. It also has cool dragon lanterns! This building is a great example of "roadside architecture." This means it's a building designed to catch your eye from the road.
Today, Walter's son, Eugene Warrington, is the owner of the stand.
