About Walter Deverell
Walter Deverell was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1827. His family was English, and they moved back to Britain when Walter was just two years old.
Early Life and Art School
Walter studied art at the Royal Academy Schools in London. This was a well-known art school. There, he met another artist named Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In 1851, Walter and Rossetti shared an art studio. It was a large room with a window that went up to the ceiling. This helped let in lots of light for painting.
Connection to the Pre-Raphaelites
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was an art group that started in 1848. Rossetti was a key member of this group. Walter Deverell's paintings began to show the style of the Pre-Raphaelites. However, his art also kept some features from older artists who painted everyday scenes, like Charles Robert Leslie.
Walter Deverell found Elizabeth Siddal, who became a very important model for the Pre-Raphaelites. She later married Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Walter also suggested Henry Treffry Dunn to be Rossetti's assistant.
Later Life and Works
Walter Deverell did not complete many major paintings. He showed only four of his works at the Royal Academy. One of his paintings, called A Pet, was painted in his house in Kew. Kew is now part of London.
Sadly, Walter Deverell died young, at the age of twenty-seven. He passed away from a kidney disease called Bright's disease.
