Walter Kimberley's Life Story
Walter Kimberley had a varied life, working in different jobs before and during his football career. He also served his country during a major war.
Early Life and Work
In 1901, Walter worked as an engraver, someone who carves designs onto metal or wood. A few years later, in 1904, he worked as a packer. When he played for Coventry City, he also worked at the Coventry Ordnance Works. This was a big factory that made weapons and other equipment.
Serving in World War I
Walter was an army reservist since 1904. This meant he was ready to join the army if needed. In August 1914, when Britain entered the First World War, he rejoined the Coldstream Guards. He was promoted to lance corporal, a junior leader in the army.
Captured as a Prisoner of War
Just a month later, in September 1914, Walter was captured by the Germans. This happened near Maubeuge during a big battle called the First Battle of the Marne. He then spent two years as a prisoner of war in camps. These camps were in places like Döberitz, Dyrotz, and Cottbus.
Health Challenges and Return Home
While he was a prisoner, Walter's health became very poor. He spent six months in a hospital because he had laryngitis (a throat infection) and bronchitis (a lung infection). His health continued to get worse. In August 1916, he was sent back to Britain because he had pulmonary tuberculosis, a serious lung disease.
As soon as he returned, he was discharged from the army. He became very ill, losing his voice permanently. Walter passed away at his home in Aston on April 22, 1917. He was buried in Witton Cemetery in Birmingham. Walter was married and had two children.
Football Career Highlights
Walter Kimberley played for several football clubs during his career. He started with local teams before joining bigger clubs.
Club Appearances and Goals
