Walter Kimbrough (born around 1967) is an American leader in education. He has served as the president of several colleges. From 2012 to 2022, he was the 7th president of Dillard University. Before that, he led Philander Smith College from 2004 to 2012.
Early Life and School
Walter Kimbrough was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents are Rev. Walter Kimbrough, Sr. and Marjorie Kimbrough. He went to public schools in Atlanta. In 1985, he graduated from Benjamin Elijah Mays High School. He was the second-highest-ranking student in his class.
He then went to the University of Georgia. There, he joined Alpha Phi Alpha. This is a special club for African-American college men, called a fraternity. He later earned a master's degree from Miami University. A master's degree is a higher-level university degree. He also earned a PhD from Georgia State University. A PhD is the highest university degree you can get. His PhD was in higher education, which means he studied how colleges work.
His Career in Education
Walter Kimbrough is well-known for his work with historically black colleges and universities. These schools, often called HBCUs, were first created to educate African-American students. He also studies the college experience of African-American men.
Kimbrough has shared that joining Alpha Phi Alpha helped him a lot. It helped him feel like he belonged at the University of Georgia. This university had mostly white students. He has written a book about black fraternities and sororities. These are social clubs for college students. His book, Black Greek 101, is a very important book on this topic.
He worked in student affairs at several universities. Student affairs means helping students with their lives outside of classes. He worked at Emory University, Georgia State University, and Old Dominion University. In 2000, when he was 32, he became a Vice President at Albany State University. In 2004, he became the President of Philander Smith College. He served there until 2012. After that, he became President of Dillard University, where he worked until 2022.
His Family Life
Walter Kimbrough is married to Adria Nobles, who is a lawyer. They have two children together.
Awards and Recognitions
Walter Kimbrough has received many honors for his work:
- In 1994, he was named "New Professional of the Year" by a group that advises fraternities.
- In 2001, he was chosen as a Nissan-ETS HBCU Fellow.
- Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine named him one of '25 To Watch' in 2009.
- In 2010, Ebony Magazine put him on their 'Power 100 list'. This list includes important African-American leaders.
- In February 2013, NBC News and TheGrio.com included him on their list of "100 African Americans making history today."
