Military Service

During World War II, Walter Read served his country. He was an officer in the United States Navy. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve. In 1962, he retired from the Navy. He had reached the rank of lieutenant commander.

Career and Leadership

Before working for the state, Walter Read was a partner at a law firm called Archer, Greiner & Read. In 1982, the Governor of New Jersey, Thomas Kean, chose him for a big job. Walter Read became the chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. This commission makes sure that casinos in New Jersey follow the rules. He led the commission for seven years, until 1989.
