Walter Robert John Swinburn (born August 7, 1961 – died December 12, 2016) was a famous jockey and horse trainer. He was known for riding horses in flat races, which are races run on a flat track without jumps. Walter competed in Great Britain and in many other countries around the world.

Walter Swinburn: A Racing Legend
Walter Swinburn was born in Oxford, England. His father, Wally Swinburn, was also a successful jockey. Wally won the Irish flat racing Champion Jockey title twice. He was the first jockey in Ireland to win over 100 races in a single flat season.
Walter was often called the "Choirboy" because of his youthful looks. He rode his first winning horse, Paddy's Luck, on July 12, 1978. This race took place at Kempton Park Racecourse.
Amazing Derby Wins
Walter Swinburn became very famous in 1981. He rode a superstar horse named Shergar to victory in The Derby. They won by an amazing 10 lengths, which was a record! The Derby is one of the most important horse races in the UK. Walter went on to win The Derby two more times in his career.
In 1983, Walter rode a female horse named All Along to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. This is a very important race in France. After that, All Along won three big races in North America. These wins helped her become the 1983 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year.
Walter also rode Pilsudski to victory in 1996. They won the Breeders' Cup Turf race in Canada. They also won the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany that same year.
Life After Racing
Walter Swinburn had a serious fall in 1996. He was in a coma for four days after the accident. This fall was thought to have caused him to develop epilepsy. He decided to retire from racing in the year 2000. He had won many important races, including eight British Classic Races.

After his career as a jockey, Walter Swinburn became a licensed horse trainer in 2004. He ran his own stables called Walter Swinburn Racing Stables. These stables were located in Aldbury, England.

Walter stopped being a flat racing trainer at the end of 2011. He explained that it was becoming difficult to fund the stables. He needed more horses to train to keep the business going. He hoped to return to training in the future.
Personal Life
Walter Swinburn married Alison Harris in 2002. Alison is the daughter of Peter Harris, who was also a horse trainer and a successful businessman. Walter and Alison had two daughters, named Claudia and Camilla.
Walter Swinburn passed away in London on December 12, 2016. He was 55 years old.
