Walter Wick (born February 23, 1953) is an American artist and photographer. He is famous for creating amazing pictures in two popular series of search-and-find books for kids: I Spy and Can You See What I See?. Both series are published by Scholastic.

Early Life and Photography

Walter Wick was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in a quiet, country area called East Granby, Connecticut. His brother first showed him how much fun photography could be.

Later, Wick went to the Paier College of Art. There, he studied photojournalism, which is about taking pictures for news stories.

A Career in Creative Photography

After finishing college, Walter Wick opened his own studio in New York City. He started his career as a commercial photographer. This meant he took pictures for businesses and advertisements.

Over time, he began to focus on photo-illustration for books and magazines. He took many pictures for Scholastic's Let's Find Out and Super Science series. He also photographed hundreds of magazine covers. You might even remember his photo puzzles from Games magazine!

The I Spy Books

In 1991, Walter Wick started working with a writer named Jean Marzollo. Together, they created the incredibly popular I Spy search-and-find picture books. They made eight original I Spy books, and millions of copies were sold!

Wick also received a special award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book first prize, for his non-fiction book A Drop of Water: A Book of Science and Wonder (1997). His book Walter Wick's Optical Tricks was even named one of the "best illustrated books" by The New York Times.

How Walter Wick Creates His Pictures

In 2003, Wick and his wife bought an old firehouse from the 1920s in Hartford. They turned this building into a fantastic art studio.

For his I Spy photographs, Wick used to use a large camera that made big negatives. But in 2004, he switched to a digital camera. The detailed scenes he photographs can take a long time to build. It might take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to set up just one scene! Each book Walter Wick works on takes about a year to finish.

Walter Wick's amazing collection of work, called Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic, has been shown in museums all over the country. Some of these include the Vero Beach Museum of Art, the Shelburne Museum, and the Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

Personal Life

Walter Wick is married to Linda Cheverton Wick. Linda used to work as a photo prop stylist for magazines and cookbooks. This means she helped arrange objects for photos.
