Walter Wick's Early Life
Walter Wick was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in the countryside of East Granby, Connecticut. His brother first showed him how fun photography could be. Later, Wick studied photojournalism at the Paier College of Art. This taught him how to tell stories with pictures.
Starting His Photography Career
After college, Walter Wick opened his own photo studio in New York City. He started as a commercial photographer. This means he took pictures for businesses. Later, he began creating photo-illustrations for books and magazines.
Famous Books and Awards
Wick worked on Scholastic's Let's Find Out and Super Science series. He also took pictures for many magazine covers. He even made photo puzzles for Games magazine.
In 1991, Wick teamed up with writer Jean Marzollo. Together, they created the very popular I Spy search-and-find books. They made eight original I Spy books. Millions of copies of these books have been sold.
Wick won an award for his book A Drop of Water: A Book of Science and Wonder (1997). This book was praised for its non-fiction content. His book Walter Wick's Optical Tricks was also named one of the best-illustrated books by The New York Times.
His Creative Studio
In 2003, Wick and his wife bought an old firehouse in Hartford. They fixed it up and turned it into an art studio. This is where he creates his amazing scenes.
Wick used a special camera for his I Spy photos at first. It made large negatives. In 2004, he started using a digital camera. Building the scenes for his photos can take days or even weeks. Each book he works on takes about a year to finish.
Exhibitions and Shows
Walter Wick's work is also shown in museums. His collection, Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic, travels around the country. It has been displayed at places like the Vero Beach Museum of Art and the Shelburne Museum.
Walter Wick's Personal Life
Walter Wick is married to Linda Cheverton Wick. She used to work as a photo prop stylist. This means she helped arrange items for photos in magazines and cookbooks.
