Waltham Forest (Legal Forest) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Waltham Forest was a special kind of royal forest in England. It started around the 1200s, after an even older forest called the Forest of Essex was no longer managed in the same way. This new forest focused on areas that had more trees.

A "forest" back then wasn't just a place with lots of trees. It was a legal area where the King or a powerful noble had the right to hunt deer. They also made special rules called "Forest Law" to protect the deer and their homes. The Normans, who came to England a long time ago, introduced these ideas.

Over time, the word "forest" started to mean what we think of today: a place with many trees.

Where Was Waltham Forest?

Waltham Forest was mainly in the areas we now know as Epping Forest and Hainault Forest. These places had many trees. Other parts of the forest, especially near the River Roding and River Lea, had fewer trees.

The forest had clear boundaries. The River Lea was on its western side. The old Roman road, now called the Romford Road (A118), marked its southern edge. The forest stretched north towards the Harlow area.

Today, the London Borough of Waltham Forest is named after this historic royal forest.
