Galax, also called the wandplant, wandflower, or beetleweed, is a unique flowering plant. It is part of the Diapensiaceae plant family. There is only one type of plant in the Galax group, and its scientific name is Galax urceolata.

This plant grows naturally in the southeastern United States. You can find it from Massachusetts and New York down to northern Alabama. It mostly lives in the Appalachian Mountains. Galax likes shaded spots in forests. It often grows at high places, up to 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet) above sea level.

What Does the Galax Plant Look Like?

Galax is an evergreen plant. This means its leaves stay green all year round. It is also a perennial plant, so it lives for more than two years. The plant usually grows to be 30–45 centimeters (about 12–18 inches) tall. Sometimes, it can grow up to 75 centimeters (about 30 inches).

The leaves of the Galax plant grow in a circle at the bottom. They are tough and feel like leather. These leaves are shaped like a rounded heart. They are usually 2.5–7.5 centimeters (1–3 inches) wide. Sometimes, they can be as wide as 15 centimeters (6 inches). The edges of the leaves have small, rounded "teeth." In winter, the leaves can turn a brownish color.

The flowers of Galax appear in late spring or early summer. They are white and grow on a single tall stem. This stem can be 20–50 centimeters (8–20 inches) tall. The flowers form a spike-like cluster that is 15–25 centimeters (6–10 inches) long. Each small flower has five petals. They are about 4 millimeters (0.15 inches) across. After the flowers, the plant produces a small fruit. This fruit is a capsule that holds many tiny seeds.

How People Use Galax

The leaves of the Galax plant are often collected. They are used in the florist industry. Florists use them in flower arrangements and decorations. Because so many leaves are collected, people worry about taking too many. To protect the plant, collecting Galax leaves is now limited in many areas.

Galax has also been used in herbalism. This is a traditional way of using plants for health. People have used Galax to help with cuts and kidney problems. Sometimes, people also grow Galax in their gardens. It is grown as an ornamental plant because it looks nice.

The city of Galax, Virginia, in the United States, is named after this plant.
