Wang Yangming (born October 31, 1472 – died January 9, 1529) was a very important person in Chinese history. His courtesy name was Bo'an. He was a philosopher, a government official, a teacher, a calligrapher (someone who writes beautifully), and a general during the Ming dynasty.

Early Life and Ideas
Wang Yangming was born with the name Wang Shouren (王守仁) in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province. He became famous for his special way of understanding a philosophy called Neo-Confucianism. His ideas had a big impact on thinking in East Asia for hundreds of years.
His Military Role
Wang Yangming was also a very successful general. He was known for making sure his soldiers followed strict rules. In 1517 and 1518, he was asked to help stop peasant uprisings in areas like Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong provinces.
He cared about the damage that war caused. So, he asked the government to offer forgiveness to some rebels. He successfully defeated the rebel armies, bringing peace to the areas.
Why He Was Important
Many important people admired Wang Yangming and his ideas. These included famous figures like Sun Zhongshan, Liang Qichao, Lin Zexu, and Mao Zedong.
- A Japanese admiral named Tōgō Heihachirō, who fought in the Russo-Japanese War, was greatly influenced by Wang. He even had a stamp that said, "One's whole life followed the example of Yangming."
- Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石), another important leader, even renamed a mountain after him. The mountain is now called Yangmingshan.
Wang Yangming's Main Ideas
Wang Yangming had two main ideas that changed how people thought:
- Knowledge and Action are One (知行合一): He believed that true knowledge isn't just knowing something in your head. It's also about putting that knowledge into action. For him, knowing and doing were connected. You truly understand something when you act on it.
- Extending Innate Knowledge (致良知): He also taught that everyone is born with a natural sense of what is good and right. This is like an inner moral compass. He believed people should try to develop and follow this inner knowledge in their daily lives.
