Yuyao (simplified Chinese: 余姚; traditional Chinese: 餘姚; pinyin: Yúyáo) is a city in the northeast of Zhejiang province, China. It is part of the larger Ningbo area.
Yuyao is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of central Ningbo. It is also 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of Hangzhou. To its north, Yuyao borders Hangzhou Bay. The city covers an area of about 1,527 square kilometers (589 square miles).

People and Population in Yuyao
As of the 2020 census, Yuyao had a population of 1,254,032 people. Its larger urban area, which includes the nearby city of Cixi, had about 3,083,520 residents. Many workers and their families have moved to Yuyao, increasing the total population to around 1.6 million.
Yuyao's Geography and Climate
Yuyao is located in a subtropical monsoon zone. This means it gets lots of sunshine and rain. The weather is generally warm and humid, with four clear seasons.
Weather Patterns in Yuyao
On average, Yuyao receives about 2,061 hours of sunshine each year. The average yearly temperature is 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit). The coldest months are usually January and February. The hottest months are July and August.
Yuyao gets about 1,300 millimeters (51 inches) of rain each year. However, the amount of rain can change a lot from year to year. Most of the rain falls during the East Asian rainy season (also called Meiyu) from April to June. There is also a lot of rain during the typhoon season from July to December. For example, in 2021, Typhoon In-fa brought 951.0 mm (37.4 inches) of rain to Yuyao.

Landscapes and Rivers
Yuyao has many different types of landscapes. You can find wide open ocean areas in Hangzhou Bay. There are also fertile plains with rice fields. In the south, you can see high peaks in the Siming Mountains.
The Yaojiang River starts in the Siming Mountains. This area is also known for being the Ninth Fantasy world of Taoism. The Yaojiang River flows through Yuyao and then eastward into the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
Yuyao's Rich History
Yuyao is famous for its long and interesting history.
Ancient Civilizations
The Neolithic Hemudu culture began in Yuyao around 5,000 B.C. This makes it one of the oldest known human civilizations on Earth. Archeological finds show that people here grew rice on a large scale. They also built houses on stilts, used boats, and respected birds and the sun.
Famous Scholars and Heroes
Many famous scholars came from Yuyao throughout history. These include:
- Yan Zi-Ling during the Han dynasty
- Yu Fan during the Three Kingdoms period
- Yu Xi during the Jin dynasty
- Yu Shinan during the Sui and Tang dynasties
- Wang Yangming, Zhu Shunshui, and Huang Zongxi during the Ming dynasty
Wang Yangming and Huang Zongxi were considered among China's top 10 thinkers. Because of these important people, Yuyao was called "the Most Famous County" and "the Famous State on Literature."
During the Anti-Japanese War, Yuyao was an important center for fighting against Japanese invaders. It was one of China's 19 main bases for resistance in eastern Zhejiang province.
Yuyao's Economy and Industries
Yuyao is traditionally known for its rice and fish. Today, its economy is growing very fast.
Modern Economic Growth
Since economic reforms began in the late 1970s, private businesses have become very important. In 2007, Yuyao's total economic output (GDP) reached 34 billion Chinese Yuan. It has had double-digit growth rates for over 20 years. Yuyao is ranked among the top 20 counties in China for its overall economic strength.

The main products made in Yuyao's factories include:

Newer, high-tech industries are also growing quickly. These include advanced materials, optics, electro-mechanical integration, and fine chemicals.
For agriculture, farming, and animal raising, Yuyao produces:

- Fruits like waxberry and mandarin oranges
- Bamboo
- Silkworms
- Fowl (like chickens)
- Livestock (like pigs)
- Fish

Transportation in Yuyao
Yuyao is well-connected by major transportation routes.
Roads and Railways
The Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway and China National Highway 329 both pass through Yuyao. The Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway also runs through the city.
Hangzhou Bay Bridge
The Hangzhou Bay Bridge is located near Yuyao's northern border. This bridge is 36 kilometers (22 miles) long and is one of the longest bridges over an ocean in the world. It greatly reduces travel time across Hangzhou Bay. Before the bridge, driving around the bay was about 420 kilometers (260 miles). Now, it's only about 80 kilometers (50 miles).
