Yu Shinan (558–638) was a very important person in early Tang dynasty China. He was known as an official, a writer, a wise scholar, and a master of calligraphy. His courtesy name was Boshi, and after he passed away, he was given the special title Duke Wenyi of Yongxing. Yu Shinan became famous during the time of Emperor Taizong, one of China's most respected emperors. His uncle, Yu Ji, also worked for the Tang imperial court. Yu Shinan is considered one of the four greatest calligraphers of the early Tang dynasty, alongside Ouyang Xun, Chu Suiliang, and Xue Ji. Emperor Taizong once said that Yu Shinan had "five absolute merits," meaning he was excellent in many ways.

Yu Shinan was born in the year 558 in a place called Yuyao, which is in Zhejiang province today.
