Wang Xiaoyun (simplified Chinese: 王小云; traditional Chinese: 王小雲; pinyin: Wáng Xiǎoyún) is a famous Chinese scientist born in 1966. She is an expert in cryptography, which is the science of making and breaking secret codes. She is also a talented mathematician and computer scientist. Wang Xiaoyun works as a professor at Shandong University and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Early Life and Education
Wang Xiaoyun was born in Zhucheng, a city in Shandong Province, China. She studied at Shandong University for many years. She earned her first degree in 1987. Then, she completed her master's degree in 1990. Finally, she received her highest degree, a doctorate, in 1993. Her main teacher for her doctorate was Pan Chengdong.
After finishing her studies, Wang Xiaoyun started teaching. She became an assistant professor in 1995. By 2001, she was a full professor. In 2005, she joined the Center for Advanced Study, Tsinghua University as a special professor.
Amazing Work in Cryptography
Wang Xiaoyun is best known for her groundbreaking work in cryptography. She helped discover weaknesses in very important digital security tools. These tools are called hash functions. Hash functions are like digital fingerprints for data. They create a short code for a long message. If the message changes, the code changes too.
Finding Collisions
In 2004, Wang Xiaoyun and her team showed something big. They found "collision attacks" against popular hash functions like MD5 and SHA-0. A collision happens when two different messages create the exact same digital fingerprint. This is a problem for security because it could allow someone to trick a computer. Imagine two different documents having the same unique ID! Her work was so important that she received a standing ovation at a big conference called CRYPTO 2004.
Breaking SHA-1
In 2005, Wang Xiaoyun and her colleagues made another huge discovery. They found a way to create collisions in SHA-1. SHA-1 was a very widely used hash function at the time. Many security products relied on it. Their method needed much less effort than experts thought before. This showed that SHA-1 was not as safe as people believed.
Later in 2005, Wang Xiaoyun, along with Andrew Yao and Frances Yao, improved this attack. They made it even faster to find collisions in SHA-1. This work was a major step forward in understanding digital security. It helped make the internet safer by pushing for stronger security tools.
Awards and Recognitions
Wang Xiaoyun has received many important awards for her work.
- In 2019, she was named a Fellow of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). This award recognized her key contributions to understanding and designing hash functions.
- Also in 2019, she became the first woman to win China's Future Science Prize. This prize honored her pioneering work in cryptography.
