Wang Xiaoyun (simplified Chinese: 王小云; traditional Chinese: 王小雲; pinyin: Wáng Xiǎoyún) is a brilliant Chinese scientist. She was born in 1966. She is an expert in cryptography, which is the science of keeping information secret and safe. She is also a talented mathematician and computer scientist.
Professor Wang teaches at Shandong University and Tsinghua University. She is also a respected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Growing Up and Learning
Wang Xiaoyun was born in a place called Zhucheng, in Shandong Province, China. She loved learning from a young age. She went to Shandong University for all her college degrees.
She earned her first degree in 1987. Then she got her master's degree in 1990. Finally, she completed her doctorate degree in 1993. After finishing her studies, she started teaching mathematics at the same university. She became a full professor in 2001.
Amazing Discoveries in Cryptography
Professor Wang Xiaoyun is famous for her work in breaking codes. She found weaknesses in important digital security tools called hash functions. Think of a hash function like a special digital fingerprint for data. It creates a short code for any message.
Cracking Hash Functions
In 2004, at a big conference called CRYPTO, Wang Xiaoyun and her team showed something amazing. They found ways to create "collisions" in popular hash functions like MD5 and SHA-0. A collision happens when two different messages end up with the exact same digital fingerprint. This is a big problem for security!
Their discovery was very important. It showed that these digital fingerprints were not as unique as people thought. This meant that digital signatures and other security systems could be at risk. The audience at the conference gave them a standing ovation.
Breaking SHA-1
In 2005, Professor Wang and her colleagues made another huge breakthrough. They found a way to break SHA-1. SHA-1 was a very widely used hash function for security. Their method made it much easier to find collisions in SHA-1.
This discovery was a big deal for computer security around the world. It showed that new, stronger hash functions were needed. Their work helped make the internet safer for everyone.
Awards and Special Honors
Professor Wang Xiaoyun has received many important awards for her groundbreaking work.
- In 2019, she was named a Fellow of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). This honor recognized her key contributions to understanding and designing hash functions.
