Wang Yung-ching (Chinese: 王永慶; pinyin: Wáng Yǒngqìng; 18 January 1917 – 15 October 2008), also known as YC Wang, was a very successful businessman from Taiwan. He started a huge group of companies that became famous around the world.

In 2008, Forbes magazine said he was the 178th richest person on Earth. His wealth was estimated to be about US$5.5 billion. Even though he only went to elementary school, he became one of Taiwan's wealthiest people.

Early Life and Business Start

Wang Yung-ching was born on January 18, 1917, in a place called Chyokutan jō. This area is now known as Chitan Village in New Taipei City, Taiwan. At the time, Taiwan was under Japanese rule.

He started his journey in business with very little. He worked hard and learned everything he could. His dedication helped him build a large business empire from the ground up.

Building a Plastics Empire

Wang Yung-ching became famous for founding the Formosa Plastics Corporation. This company grew into one of the biggest plastic manufacturers in the world. He led the company for many years, making it a global leader.

In June 2006, when he was 89 years old, he decided to step down as chairman of Formosa Plastics. He wanted to slowly retire from his other leadership roles too. He also supported important organizations like the Ming-chi Institute of Technology and the Chang Gung Medical Foundation. These foundations focus on education and healthcare.

Family and Legacy

Wang Yung-ching had a large family. He had ten children in total. Many of his children also became successful in business, following in his footsteps.

His son, Winston Wang, started a company called Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing. His daughter, Charlene Wang, founded First International Computer, Inc. Another daughter, Cher Wang, co-founded two major technology companies: High Tech Computer (HTC), known for its smartphones, and VIA Technologies. Cher Wang's success in technology made her one of the wealthiest people in Taiwan.

Wang Yung-ching passed away peacefully on October 15, 2008, at his home in Short Hills, New Jersey, in the United States. He was 91 years old. His life story is an example of how hard work and determination can lead to great success.
