Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Wanyuru were an Aboriginal Australian group of people who lived in the state of Queensland. They were one of the many First Nations peoples of Australia.

Who Were the Wanyuru?

The Wanyuru people are known by the name recorded by a researcher named Tindale. However, a language expert named Robert Dixon later said that the people who spoke the Wañjurru language did not have a specific tribal name that is known today. Sometimes, their name was also spelled as Wanjar.

Where Did They Live?

The traditional lands of the Wanyuru people covered about 518 square kilometers (200 square miles). This area was in Queensland, Australia. Their country stretched from south of where the Russell River flows into the Coral Sea. It went down towards Cooper Point and the town of Innisfail. Like other groups who lived in the rainforests of this area, such as the Kunja people, the Wanyuru's land also reached inland towards Babinda.

Their Language

The language spoken by the Wanyuru people was called Wañurr(u). This language was closely related to two other languages: Yidiny and Gunggay. Gunggay was spoken by the Gungganyji people. These three languages were actually different ways of speaking (dialects) of the same main language.
