History of Warendorf District
Long ago, in the Middle Ages, the area that is now Warendorf district was part of a special territory. This territory was ruled by a religious leader called a Prince-Bishop. It was known as the Prince-Bishopric of Münster.
Later, the region became part of Prussia. Prussia was a powerful kingdom in Germany. In 1816, the Prussian government created two new districts: Warendorf and Beckum.
Much later, in 1975, these two districts joined together. They formed the Warendorf district that we know today.
Geography of Warendorf
The Warendorf district is located in western Germany. It lies to the east of the large city of Münster.
Two important rivers flow through or near the district. The Ems River travels through the district from east to west. The Lippe River forms part of the southern border of the district.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for the Warendorf district tells a story. It combines symbols from the old Warendorf and Beckum districts.
The coat of arms has two special symbols. The two "sun roses" come from the old Warendorf coat of arms. These roses were originally from the family symbol of the Vogt family, who lived in Warendorpe. The wavy line comes from the old Beckum coat of arms. This line represents the many rivers and water sources in the area, especially the Werse River. The district was given this coat of arms in 1976. |
