Wares Creek is a small stream in Manatee County, Florida. It is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) long. This stream flows into the Manatee River. The area around the creek, especially near downtown Bradenton, is called the Wares Creek neighborhood. People in this neighborhood have worked to clean up the creek. There was even an idea to create a canoe path next to it. A bridge on Manatee Avenue goes over Wares Creek.
Wares Creek: A Look at Its Past

The name of Wares Creek comes from a person named Elbridge Ware. He moved to the area from Tallahassee with his wife in 1845. Sadly, a big storm (a hurricane) destroyed his home the next year. Because of this, the Ware family moved back to Tallahassee.
Protecting Wares Creek
In 2011, money was set aside to help control flooding in the creek. This involved digging out the bottom of the creek to make it deeper. This helps water flow better and prevents floods.
Sometimes, accidents happen. In 2019, a pipe carrying wastewater broke. About 80,000 gallons (302,833 liters) of wastewater went into the creek. When this happens, it's important to clean it up quickly to protect the environment.
