What Inspires Her Poetry

Warsan Shire gets ideas for her poems from her own life. She also uses stories from people she knows well. She often writes about people whose voices are not always heard. This includes immigrants, refugees, and other groups who might feel left out.

Warsan has said that she explores memories in her writing. She tries to understand things through her own memories and those of others. She is a first-generation immigrant. This means she was born in a new country, but her parents were born elsewhere. Her poetry helps her connect with Somalia, her family's home country. She has never visited Somalia, but she calls it "a nation of poets."

One of her most famous lines is: "No one leaves home unless / home is the mouth of a shark." This line is from her poem "Conversations about home (at a deportation centre)". Many people see it as a powerful message for refugees and those who support them.
