Warsaw, also called Jamestown, is a small place in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a recognized area where people live, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Warsaw used to be an official town a long time ago.
A Look Back: Warsaw's Story
Warsaw was first named Jamestown. This was to honor Jamestown, Virginia, a very old and famous place. Later, its name was changed to Warsaw. This new name likely came from Warsaw, Virginia. Some of the first families who settled in this area of Alabama came from that Virginia town. The Virginia town itself was named after Warsaw, Poland.
In February 1839, the Alabama Legislature officially made Warsaw a town. This means it became "incorporated" and had its own local rules. Warsaw is one of the oldest communities in Sumter County.
A post office served the area under the name Jamestown from 1832 to 1842. Then, it changed to the name Warsaw and operated from 1842 until 1910. After the year 1910, Warsaw was no longer an incorporated town, but it has kept its name the same ever since.
