Wasena is a cool neighborhood located in Roanoke, Virginia, in the United States. It sits in the south-central part of Roanoke. A main road, U.S. Route 221 (also called Main Street), cuts right through it. The Roanoke River flows just north of Wasena.

Wasena shares its borders with several other neighborhoods. To the west, you'll find Raleigh Court. To the north and east, it borders Old Southwest. You can reach Mountain View by crossing the Wasena Bridge over the Roanoke River. To the south, it touches Franklin-Colonial. Back in 2000, about 1,633 people called Wasena home.

How Wasena Got Its Name

The name "Wasena" comes from a Native American word. It means "beautiful view." This name perfectly describes the area's lovely scenery.

Early Development and Growth

Wasena became part of the city of Roanoke in 1919. After that, it started to grow quickly in the 1920s. It became one of the first suburbs of Roanoke. Most of the buildings you see in Wasena today were built between the 1920s and the 1950s.
