Franklin-Colonial is a friendly neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia. It's located in the southwest part of the city. Three main roads, Franklin Road, the Roy L. Webber Expressway, and Colonial Avenue, run through the middle of it.

This neighborhood shares its borders with several other areas. To the north, you'll find Wasena and South Jefferson. To the west are Grandin Court and Raleigh Court. South Roanoke is to the east. The southern edge of Franklin-Colonial meets Roanoke County. Back in 2000, about 2,860 people lived in Franklin-Colonial.

History of Franklin-Colonial

How the Neighborhood Grew

Franklin-Colonial mostly developed after World War II. This was a time when many new homes were built outside of city centers, creating what we call "suburban" areas. These places often have houses with yards and are connected to the city by roads.

Joining the City

During this period, Franklin-Colonial was officially added to the city of Roanoke. Before that, it was part of Roanoke County. This process is called "annexation," which means a city expands its borders to include new areas.
