The Washington Block is a special building in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is known as a Chicago Landmark. This means it is an important historical place. The building is located in the downtown area of Chicago, called the Loop.

Architects Frederick and Edward Baumann designed the Washington Block. It was built between 1873 and 1874. This was right after the big Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire destroyed much of Chicago. The Washington Block was one of the first new buildings. It was made a Chicago Landmark on January 14, 1997.

When it was finished, the Washington Block was one of the tallest buildings in Chicago. It is a rare example of a special building technique. This technique is called the "isolated pier foundation." This method helped Chicago become famous for building skyscrapers. The building has outside walls made of limestone. It used to have stairs on the outside that led to a second-floor entrance. Inside, the lobby has a beautiful curving wooden staircase. Today, a 7-Eleven store is on the first floor. A law office, Carter Legal Group PC, is on the second floor. The building is five stories tall. You can find it at the corner of North Wells Street and West Washington Street.

Building History

The Washington Block was first meant for fancy offices. Companies wanted to be near the busy LaSalle Street financial area. This area was growing fast. However, when the Chicago 'L' train was built next to the building, things changed. The train made the area noisy. Fancy businesses no longer wanted to rent offices there.

In the mid-1900s, the building's owner made some changes. They removed some of the detailed decorations from the ground floor. This was done to make the shops look more modern. Later, in the 21st century, new owners worked to fix up the building. They added back some of the original details during a restoration project.

How the Building Stands Tall

The Washington Block uses a special way to build its base. This is called the "isolated pier foundation." Imagine a building standing on many separate legs instead of one big flat base. That's what this technique does.

What is an Isolated Pier Foundation?

This building method uses several separate foundations. Each foundation is placed under a main support point of the building. This is different from using one large foundation. Chicago's soil can be soft and sandy. A single large foundation might crack as the building settles. But separate foundations can move a little bit on their own. This makes the building's base much stronger and last longer.

This special foundation allowed buildings to be built on soft ground. Before this, builders thought they needed solid rock for tall buildings. Because of this new method, skyscrapers could be built in places like Chicago. Many tall buildings were then constructed in the city.
