The Waterstone Children's Book Prize
Presented by Waterstones
Date 21 March 2023
Country United Kingdom
First awarded 2005; 20 years ago (2005)

The Waterstones Children's Book Prize is a special award given every year to the best new children's books. It celebrates books published in the United Kingdom during the year before. The prize started in 2005.

Its main goal is to find new and exciting writers for kids. Because of this, only authors who have published a few books (usually two or three) can enter. The famous British bookshop chain, Waterstones, gives out this award.

The prize was first called the Ottakar's Children's Book Prize. This was named after the Ottakar's bookshop chain. In 2006, all Ottakar's shops became Waterstones stores. So, the prize also changed its name to the Waterstones Children's Book Prize.

In 2012, the prize became even bigger! It was split into three different groups:

  • Picture Books (for younger readers)
  • Fiction 5–12 (for middle-grade readers)
  • Teen (for older readers)

Each book that wins in its group gets £2,000. Then, one overall winner is chosen from these three. The overall winner gets an extra £3,000, making their total prize £5,000!

In 2016, the names of the categories changed a little. Picture Books became Illustrated Books. Fiction 5–12 became Younger Fiction. The Teen category was renamed Older Fiction.
