Watervliet is a city in Berrien County, located in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 1,669 people lived there. It is mostly a rural farming community.
Even though it is surrounded by Watervliet Charter Township, the city has its own government. The name "Watervliet" comes from Dutch words meaning "flowing water." A "vliet" is a small stream or canal.

History of Watervliet
In 1905, a man named John Olsen and a woman named Maud Nelson moved to Watervliet. They started a women's baseball team. Both of them were experienced baseball players.
Their team, called the "Cherokee Indian Baseball Team," traveled in a special Pullman car. This car even had electric lights, a grandstand, and a long fence. Maud Nelson, who was born in Italy, was on the team. Her husband, John Olsen, said she was the best women's pitcher in the world.
