Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wawasee, also known as Wawaausee or Wawbee, was an important leader of the Miami people. His name meant "Full Moon." He lived in what is now Kosciusko County, Indiana, in the United States. Wawasee was the brother of another well-known Miami chief named Papakeecha.

Who Was Chief Wawasee?

Chief Wawasee was known for being very big and strong, just like his brother Papakeecha. He was a respected leader within the Miami tribe. Even though he was not the main chief, his connection to Papakeecha made him quite important.

For special events, Chief Wawasee would dress up. He had a unique silver ring that he wore through the cartilage of his nose. Sometimes, he would use a fish bone instead of the silver ring.

His Land and Agreements

Wawasee was one of the chiefs who signed the Treaty of Mississinewas. This was an important agreement that involved his people.

In the mid-1830s, Chief Wawasee was given land for a small village. This village was located where the town of Syracuse is today. It was near the southeast part of Waubee Lake and included the eastern shores of the lake.

What's Named After Wawasee?

Chief Wawasee is remembered in several places and names today. A large lake, which was once called Turkey Lake, was renamed Lake Wawasee in his honor.

Both Wawasee, Indiana and Wawasee Village are named after him. Also, Wawasee High School, which serves the Syracuse area, carries his name.
