A Look Back at Way's History
Way has an interesting past, especially for a small community. It is located along the Grenada Railroad, which was an important way to travel and move goods a long time ago.
Post Office History
The community had a post office that opened a long time ago.
- From 1858 to 1895, it was known as "Way's Bluff."
- Then, from 1895 to 1968, its name was simply "Way."
This shows how the community's name changed over time.
Population in the Past
In the year 1900, Way was a very small place. It had a population of only 36 people. This gives us an idea of how tiny the community was more than a hundred years ago.
The Allison's Wells Hotel
Way was once home to a famous place called the Allison's Wells Hotel.
- People described it as a grand and beautiful building.
- It even had a large ballroom where events and dances could be held.
In 1948, a group called the Mississippi Art Colony started meeting at this hotel. Artists would gather there to create and share their work. Sadly, the hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1963.
Modern Centers in Way
Today, Way is home to two important centers that are part of the Episcopal diocese (a religious organization):
- Camp Bratton-Green
- The Gray Center
These places often host camps, meetings, and events for the community and the church.
