About the Show
We Are the Champions was a popular children's game show. It was shown on BBC1 in the United Kingdom. The show was created by Alan Russell and Ron Pickering. Each episode lasted about 30 minutes.
What Was It Like?
The show was set up like a traditional British school sports day. Children from different schools would compete against each other. They took part in various sports. These included athletics events and swimming races. It was all about teamwork and trying your best.
At the end of each show, something special happened. The presenter, Ron Pickering, would shout "Away Y' Go!" Then, all the children would run and jump or dive into a swimming pool. This happened as the show's ending music played. It was a very exciting way to finish!
Who Hosted the Show?
The main host for most of the show's run was Ron Pickering. He was the presenter from 1973 until 1990. Sadly, he passed away in 1991.
After Ron Pickering, other famous sports stars hosted special episodes. These included Gary Lineker, Linford Christie, and Judy Simpson. They continued the show's spirit of sportsmanship.
The 2010 Revival
In March 2010, We Are the Champions returned for a short time. It was part of the BBC's Sport Relief event. Sport Relief helps raise money for good causes through sports.
This new version was hosted by Paddy McGuinness. Famous athletes joined as team captains. These included Tim Henman (tennis), Amir Khan (boxing), Dame Kelly Holmes (running), and Mark Foster (swimming). It was a great way to bring the classic show back for a new generation.
How Many Episodes?
The show had a total of 16 series (seasons). Over the years, 104 episodes were made. This number includes 13 special episodes. These special episodes often featured children with disabilities. The show ran for many years, showing how popular it was with young viewers.
