How Weber City Got Its Name

The name "Weber City" has a fun story behind it. Before it was called Weber City, the area was known as "Moccasin Gap." This name came from a natural opening in the mountains that US 23 now passes through.

A local business owner named Frank Parker Sr. heard the name "Weber City" on an old radio show called Amos 'n' Andy. In the show, it was a fancy place. As a joke, Mr. Parker put up a sign outside his gas station that said "Welcome to Weber City." People in the area started using the name, and by the time the town officially became a town in 1954, everyone knew it as Weber City. So, that's the name they chose!

Where is Weber City Located?

Weber City is found at 36°37′24″N 82°33′40″W / 36.62333°N 82.56111°W / 36.62333; -82.56111. It covers an area of about 1.72 square miles (4.47 square kilometers), and almost all of it is land.

The town is on the southern side of Moccasin Gap. This gap is a natural break in the mountains made by Big Moccasin Creek. Long ago, pioneers used this gap to travel into Tennessee. South of Weber City, another gap leads into Tennessee. US 23 is the main road that goes through Weber City. It's an important road for travel north and south in western Virginia.
