The Weeki Wachee River is a beautiful river located in Hernando County, Florida, in the United States. It flows about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west from its starting point in Weeki Wachee all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Where the river meets the Gulf is called an estuary, which is a special place where fresh river water mixes with salty ocean water.

Discovering the Weeki Wachee River

The name "Weeki Wachee" comes from the Seminole language. It means something like "small spring" or "offshoot of a town named Spring." This name perfectly describes the river, as it is famous for its amazing natural spring.

The Incredible Weeki Wachee Spring

The Weeki Wachee River starts from a very special place: an underground river that surfaces as a spring. This spring is known as the deepest natural spring in the entire United States. It's like a giant, clear pool of water that bubbles up from deep within the Earth!

The spring itself is quite large. It measures about 150 feet (46 meters) wide and 250 feet (76 meters) long. Every single day, an incredible 150 million gallons (644 million liters) of water flow out of this spring. That's a lot of water! The water in the spring and river stays at a comfortable temperature of about 72 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit (22-23 degrees Celsius) all year long. This makes it a great place for swimming and exploring.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park: Home of Mermaids

The Weeki Wachee River is perhaps most famous because of the Weeki Wachee Springs attraction. This popular park is built right around the spring. It's known worldwide for its unique underwater theater, where performers dress up as mermaids and put on shows! They swim and dance underwater, using special breathing techniques. It's a magical experience that draws visitors from everywhere.

Besides the mermaid shows, the park also offers other fun activities. You can take a boat ride down the river, enjoy a water park, and even see some of Florida's amazing wildlife. The clear, cool waters of the river are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding, letting you explore the natural beauty of the area.
