Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Weesaw (born in 1785 and passed away in September 1836) was an important war chief of the Potawatomi people. He and his group lived in an area that later became known as Gard's Prairie in Volinia Township, Michigan. Weesaw was the son of Anaquiba. He was married to Sinegogua Topinabee, who was a daughter of the well-known leader Topinabee.

Weesaw played a key role in signing the 1821 Treaty of Chicago. This treaty gave a large part of Michigan to the United States, except for a small area in Berrien County and a piece of land near Niles, Michigan.

Who Was Weesaw?

Weesaw was a respected leader among the Potawatomi. He was known for his impressive appearance. People described him as tall and majestic. He also enjoyed wearing special ornaments, such as a large silver amulet.

Weesaw's Role as a Leader

Weesaw served as a principal sub-chief under the main leader, Topinabee. This means he was one of the most important leaders helping Topinabee guide their people. Other important sub-chiefs working with them included Pokagon and Shavehead. Together, these leaders helped make important decisions for the Potawatomi community.
