History of Weethalle
The land where Weethalle now stands traditionally belongs to the Wiradjuri people. They are the original inhabitants of this area.
Early Settlement and Growth
In 1921, the Weethalle area was set aside for returned soldiers. These soldiers were given land to start farms after World War I. The Rankins Springs railway line was extended to Weethalle in 1922. This made it easier to transport goods. Farmers began clearing the land for crops. By 1923, the first wheat grown in the area was sent from the Weethalle railway station.
In 1924, a spot was chosen for a village to support the surrounding farms. Land for town buildings was sold the next year. By 1926, a basic town had started to form. Buildings were being constructed, mostly from wood. A temporary school opened that same year. A branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney also began operating.
A Thriving Town
By 1928, Weethalle was growing very quickly. People said the town had "sprung up in the night." A new hotel was built that year. It cost a lot of money, about £13,000. The town also had a bank, two stores, and shops for butchers and bakers. There was a hairdresser, a tobacconist, and several agents. Weethalle had a school, a doctor, and a hall for dances and movies. A train service ran three times a week.
Sports in Weethalle
The most popular sport in Weethalle is rugby league. The town had its own team called the Weethalle Kangaroos. They used to play in the Group 17 Rugby League competition. Today, players from Weethalle usually join teams in nearby towns. They play for either West Wyalong or Rankins Springs.
