Weißenbach am Lech is a charming village in Austria. It is located in the state of Tyrol, within the Reutte area. This beautiful place is known for its stunning natural surroundings.
Discover Weißenbach am Lech!
Weißenbach is a long village nestled in the 'Nature Park Tyrolean Lech'. The Lech River here has a very wide and mostly untouched riverbed. This area is home to many rare plants, insects, and birds.
The village gets its name from the Weissenbach river, which means 'white river' in English. This river flows right through the center of Weißenbach. The village is located where the Weissenbach river meets the Lech river from the north. On the opposite side, the Rot Lech river also flows into the Lech after passing through deep canyons.
A Journey Through Time
New discoveries suggest that people have lived in Weißenbach since the early Stone Ages. In 1948, Roman skeletons were also found here. This shows that people have been part of this land for a very long time!
The Romans used to have an important salt trading route that passed through this area. This route connected Hall in Tirol to Lake Constance. It was mainly used for trade until a train line was built through the Arlberg in the early 1900s. Many parts of the old road are still in good condition today.
Weißenbach was once a busy center because it was at the foot of the steep Gaicht pass road. Carts needed extra horses to get over this pass, which brought a lot of activity to the village. However, this source of income quickly stopped when the train line over the Arlberg mountains was completed.
Life and Work in Weißenbach
Many people who live in Weißenbach work in the nearby town of Reutte. Tourism is still an important part of the local economy. There are also service businesses and a few small industrial companies that provide jobs for the community.
In 2008, the renovation of the village church was completed. This church was built in the Gothic style, but its interior was decorated in a later Romanic style.
