The Welcome Islands (also called Islas Bienvenido in Spanish) are a small group of rocky islands. They are found north of the main island of South Georgia. These islands are located to the east of Bird Island.
Discovering the Welcome Islands
These islands are about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west-northwest of Cape Buller. Cape Buller is a point on the north coast of South Georgia. The famous explorer Captain James Cook discovered these islands in the year 1775. The name "Welcome Islands" has been used since at least 1912 and is still used today.
Highest Point on the Islands
The tallest part of the Welcome Islands reaches a height of 88 meters (289 feet). This makes them quite small but still noticeable in the ocean.
