The Welcome Islands are a group of three islands in Lake Superior, located in Ontario, Canada. They are found in the southeastern part of the Port of Thunder Bay, about 6 nautical miles (11 km) from the shore.
These islands are across from Mission Island and McKellar Island, which are near where the Kaministiquia River flows into Thunder Bay. People sometimes call the Welcome Islands the "Three Sisters" because there are three main islands. They are officially part of the city of Thunder Bay.
Exploring the Welcome Islands
The Welcome Islands are important for ships traveling in Lake Superior. There are shallow areas, called shoals, around the islands that ships need to avoid to stay safe.
Keeping Ships Safe
The Port Authority of Thunder Bay helps guide ships in the area. They have a special "calling-in point" on the middle island. This is a spot where ships can check in and get instructions before moving further into the port. This helps keep all the boats and ships safe as they travel.
