History of Weldon, Arkansas
Weldon started as a stop along a railroad line. This railroad was called the Batesville & Brinkley Railroad. It was a narrow-gauge line, which means its tracks were closer together than standard tracks. This railway connected the towns of Brinkley and Newport in Arkansas.
Over time, this railroad became part of the larger Rock Island Railroad. However, the railroad line through Weldon was no longer used after 1940.
The Old Railroad Depot
Even after the railroad stopped running, the old train station, known as the Weldon Rock Island depot, remained. It stood for another 50 years. On June 11, 1992, this historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important places in American history.
Sadly, the depot eventually became too old and damaged. It was removed from the National Register on September 25, 2012.
