The Story of Wellborn: A Look Back
Wellborn started in 1867 as a camp for building the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. It was part of a large piece of land given to A.M. McMahon. The first businesses, like a store and a place to process cotton, were set up by John and Thomas Royder.
How Wellborn Got Its Name
There are a few ideas about how Wellborn got its name. Some say it came from a well at the construction camp. Others believe it was named after a foreman named E.W. Wellborn. Another idea is that it was named after a landowner, W.W. Wilburn.
Growth and Changes Over Time
In 1867, a post office opened in the community, first called Wellborn Station. Three years later, its name was shortened to just Wellborn. By the mid-1880s, Wellborn became a place where cattle were shipped out. About 50 people lived there at that time.
In 1885, Wellborn had two churches, a gristmill (which grinds grain), and a cotton gin (which separates cotton fibers). By 1910, the population grew to 400 people. However, after that, Wellborn started to shrink.
Wellborn's Decline and Revival
The number of people living in Wellborn dropped to 40 by 1950. This happened partly because nearby cities like College Station and Bryan grew bigger. By the late 1980s, the population was back up to about 100.
In 1990, Wellborn had 20 businesses, a community center, and water services. The population stayed around 100 through the 1990s and into 2000. A new water tower was built in 2001.
Wellborn Today and Its Fight for Independence
Even though Wellborn is not an official city, it has its own post office with the ZIP code 77881. The Wellborn Cemetery, which is very old (from the early 1870s), is a special historic landmark.
In 2009, a group called the Citizens for Wellborn Committee was formed. They are a non-profit group that wanted to explore becoming an official city. However, Wellborn is in an area that College Station has some control over. This means College Station's city council had to give permission for Wellborn residents to vote on becoming a city.
On April 14, 2011, the College Station City Council voted to make Wellborn part of College Station. This was a big decision for the people of Wellborn who wanted to stay independent.
Wellborn on TV
