Wellenstein (called Wellesteen in Luxembourgish) was once a special type of local area in Luxembourg called a commune. It was located in a larger region known as the canton of Remich.

What Was Wellenstein?

A commune is like a small town or district that has its own local government. Wellenstein was one of these independent areas in the country of Luxembourg. It was known for its beautiful countryside and vineyards.

Where Was Wellenstein Located?

Wellenstein was found in the southeastern part of Luxembourg. This area is close to the Moselle River. The Moselle River forms part of the border between Luxembourg and Germany.

The Merger: Becoming Part of Schengen

On January 1, 2012, Wellenstein changed. It joined together with another commune called Burmerange. These two communes merged to create a brand new, larger commune. This new commune was named Schengen.

Why Do Communes Merge?

Sometimes, smaller communes decide to merge. They do this to work together more easily. Merging can help them share resources and services. It can also make local government more efficient. This is what happened with Wellenstein and Burmerange. They became part of the bigger Schengen area.
