The History of Wellingrove

How Wellingrove Started

Wellingrove began in the 1840s. A large area of land, about 50,000 acres, was claimed by George Polhill. He was a resident magistrate, which means he was a local judge. Polhill used this land as a place to hold court sessions. These courts handled legal matters for the area between Ben Lomond and Bolivia.

In 1849, a building called the Woolpack Inn was built. That same year, a surveyor named Galloway was asked to map out new towns at Wellingrove and Glen Innes. Galloway thought Wellingrove was too far from the main roads. Despite his concerns, the town was officially recognized in 1852. For many years, Wellingrove was an important settlement in the northern New England region.

Why Wellingrove Changed

Wellingrove started to decline in 1858. This happened when the local court sessions moved to Glen Innes. The last business to close was the Wellingrove Hotel, which shut down in 1917. As nearby towns like Glen Innes and Inverell grew, Wellingrove became less important. Today, it is a very small village.

What is Wellingrove Like Today?

Today, Wellingrove has a church, a Rural Fire Service (RFS) station, and a community hall. It is also in a special area where people can look for sapphires and zircons. These are valuable gemstones. The main jobs in Wellingrove are in agriculture. People mostly raise sheep and beef cattle.

Kings Plains National Park is a natural area located about 20 kilometers northwest of Wellingrove. It is a great place to explore the outdoors.
