How the Park Started

Wellington State Park exists thanks to a very generous person named Elizabeth R. Wellington. In 1931, she gave a large piece of land, known as the Wellington Reservation, to the state. She sold it for a tiny amount of money – just $1!

The Civilian Conservation Corps

After the land was given to the state, the park was developed during the 1930s. This work was done by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program in the United States that helped young men find jobs during a tough economic time. They built many parks and public areas, and Wellington State Park is one of their amazing projects.
